5 Blogging Questions with Ben Arment, Pastor of History Church

By Cory Miller

As part of the “Blogging 101 for Pastors” series [click here to see all the posts], I’ve been asking several proflic blogging pastors or believers to answer five basic questions about blogging.

Ben Arment of “History in the Making” is pastor of History Church in Reston, Va., a church planted he founded in 2001. According to his bio, he previously served as an ad agency writer and producer (pretty cool!).

I love his first answer to the 5 Blogging Questions …

1. Why (or how) did you start blogging?

I started blogging in 2001 as a way to document our new church plant’s development. My blog is called “History in the Making” because it’s the “captain’s log,” if you will, of planting History Church.

2. What subject do you post most about?

I blog mostly about church planting. I’ve never advertised my blog within our own church, but have built a tremendous network of planters all over the country. Church planting conferences are like family reunions for me.

3. What are your favorite blog tools?

I switched from Blogger to Typepad Pro several years ago because of its built-in capabilities for photos, stats, feeds, etc.

4. How often do you post?

I post at least two times a day, preferably before noon. My dark secret is that I fully utilize Typepad’s time-released posting feature, which lets me spread any abundant idea spurts across the week in one sitting.

5. What one piece of advice would you give for prospective blogging pastors?

Use your blog as a PR tool – I learned this by observing Mark Batterson. Don’t write anything negative about your church, other pastors, or people who have hurt you. And always, always link your idea sources.
