Church Plant to ‘Pimp’ Ride

By Cory Miller

XL, a church plant located in Rome, Ga., is doing a unique outreach event in their community … they want to “pimp” someone’s ride for a three-week series.

According to Jason Alford, program director for XL and a CCP feedreader, the series and promotion is titled XL Pimp My Ride, named after a popular MTV show, which takes vehicles in terrible condition and restores them.

To promote the event, the church placed ads on five billboards around the region and one electronic board, according to Alford, with the Website address www.xlpimpmyride.com. At the site they could submit their car for restoration. More than 30 cars were submitted for the contest, and one will be chosen this Sunday at XL.

The hope is that people will bring their friends to watch the restoration of their car.

“Sunday night, we will announce the winner and drive their car into the building and up on the stage,” Alford said in an email to me. “This is a three-week series that we knew would not only hit our target right on, but also create some buzz around town from those who don’t know our heart or know the generation we’re targeting.”

“To say that has happened would be an understatement.”

Already there has been a letter to the editor in the local newspaper and an editorial cartoon about the event.

Updates and pictures from the car being restored will be available online at: XLwired.com
