The Number One Thing for Generating Buzz
ByI’ve been scoping the web and some blogs and have noticed that there are many topics, lists and podcasts on “How to Generate Buzz for Your Church.” I admit that I love this type of discussion and my marketing mind is always thinking of new ways to get a client noticed…this includes churches. But lately God has been working on me or maybe I am beginning to see things from an entirely different perspective as I talk more to unchurched people in my community. I firmly believe that there is one main thing to focus on for generating buzz in our churches and that is being Biblical.
What? That’s it, you might be saying? Every one knows that churches should be biblical! But here’s the deal – there are many who do not. I am finding out that a lot of churches are now trying to manufacture experiences, craft clever sermon series, and be the first in the market to implement the latest technology in order to generate interest. There has become such a focus on what we can do that some of us have lost sight on what it means to allow God to bring the “buzz”.
I am not saying that we throw out all the branding, the marketing, or the relevant communication tools, but without the Bible being the foundation for what we are offering, all we might be doing is promoting another type of Disney World. Check out my “Conversation with an Un-Churched Friend” post at The Branding Shed for some food for thought. I am also not implying that these things are bad (otherwise I’d put myself out of work) but I am saying that we are in a time where people need to hear, believe, and follow strong and correct biblical teaching. The Truth is that the Truth changes lives! Please read that again.
If we are preaching, teaching, and living sound doctrine and if we are allowing God to be the CEO of our churches, then buzz is going to happen because He is going to radically change lives. If the people in your church are seeing God’s hand at work then they are going to run and tell everyone else. It’s documented in Scripture.
I appreciate Mark Driscoll not because of his witty humor or sarcastic comments (though I do enjoy them) but because of his insane passion for expository preaching and sound doctrine and theology. I truly believe this is why Mars Hill has been so blessed. Yes, he does say some things that are controversial and Mars Hill uses the tools that the world uses but there is no doubt in my mind that the main emphasis is on being biblical. It’s just not Driscoll though – all their elders and deacons live that and they pass on that DNA to the people in their church. God’s Word has generated more buzz than anything.
If you want to grow your church and generate buzz in your community – preach the Truth, the whole Truth, and nothing but the Truth.
