Over the past month or so, I’ve been working with Yahoo! columnist and blogger Penelope Trunk … career coach extraordinare. She’s been a blast to work with … and just seeing the stats from her blog has made my eyes cross sometimes.

Well … she’s just released a new book called Brazen Careerist: The New Rules for Success.

Anyway, I was talking with her about doing a Q&A on the topic of work and career and the intersection of that with faith and spiritual values … and I thought I’d open up the brainstorming of ideas to the readers of this blog.

I think it’d be fun to poise some good questions to her about how a person of deep convictions — enter the evangelical Christian — can “successfully” live out your faith and values in the workplace.

Also … I’d love to hear some questions from pastors that they’d love to get the unique perspective of a “career coach” … both the questions and answers will be interesting to hear I’m sure.

Let’s be general about the questions. But also think about different scenarios a Christ-follower in particular might face. And the whole subject of “faith in the workplace.”

Yes, it was bound to happen sooner or later! I am taking some notes from Cory Miller and will be launching a “Rockin Church Plant” series in a couple of months. Since church planting is in my blood and I can totally relate to these radical visionaries who are in the trenches daily following God’s call, I naturally have to give out some props to my band of brothers! And you can help too…

There are many guys who are planting awesome churches and that are risking it all for the Kingdom. Many of these guys are doing it without ample support, are bi-vocational, or starting in a hostile environment. There are church plants who are making big waves in their community, getting national attention, or breaking the mold of what it means to be a church. Then there are planters and their teams who just deserve some high-fives because they are willing to go the distance and making great sacrifices to follow His call. This absolutely rocks! I wish I could list and give them all recognition but here’s how the deal will work.

I am going to name and interview the 25 church plants who should be considered the elite “Rockin Church Plants” of 2007 and give them some promotion. And while I have my own recommendations – I also want to know who you would nominate or give this title to as well!

I would like the nominees to meet at least one of the following criteria such as:

being passionate about their church plant and willing to risk it all for this calling

being missional and effective at reaching their community

breaking the Status Quo and thinking outside of the box

excellence in brand image and style

truly relating to today’s culture or their focus group

any church that you feel should have the title of a “Rockin Church Plant”

My only requirement is that the nominees must be a church that has been around less than four years because beyond this they have survived the crucial stages of planting and are not really considered a “church plant” anymore.

If you have a church plant or planter in mind, I want to hear from you. Please e-mail your nomination(s) to brandingshed@gmail.com by April 30th, 2007 and include:

the church plant name

the lead pastor’s name

their website or blog address

their phone number

a quick sentence of why you are nominated them

Once the nomination process and additional research is completed, I will start posting the results and their information. I look forward to your input and who will be listed as the 25 “Rockin Church Plants” for 2007!

Check out my church’s Youth Ministry’s new website — Q-Drive.

Here are some details about the site:

Site is managed using Blogger via their FTP publishing option.

Template is a tweaked version of Blogger’s Minima template (one of my favorites).

Total cost: Roughly $9 for domain name. (Our hosting plan includes unlimited hosting of unique domain names.)

It’s still in beta … we’re still tweaking it.

I’m hoping to optimize it for search engines.

We’re using FeedBlitz as a free email newsletter. Our youth pastor posts to the blog, FeedBlitz sees it and sends it out.

We’re using categories (like For Parents) to distinguish posts for different audiences.

Flickr is making photo galleries a breeze!

Tobin Jackson rocks! (Yes, he’s our rockin’ youth pastor!)

The situation: I needed to give Tobin a way to update his individual specific ministry website (we’ve got a general brochure-type youth section on the main church website). I told him about using Blogger as a free Content Management System and he was eager to be my test case! We bought the domain name. I tweaked the template. We got it going. And in the process added some free bells and whistles for functionality.

One final note: This is a first step for Tobin and his ministry. I’ll be the first to admit, it’s a patched system, but it seems to be working, it costs us nearly nothing, and Tobin is happy about it all. We’ll reevaluate as he gets down the road and see what his needs are. I think this solution could be used for bootstrapped ministries and even churches.

This may be a little too late for some of you this Christmas, but I wanted to show you the invite business card we used for our musical presentation this year. Granger calls these “invest and invite” cards.

Download a printable PDF with our Christmas invest and invite cards sample here.

Ingredients Used:

* 2,500 Business card printing from Online Print House

* IStockPhoto for the front image, then I used the color scheme for the back

* Fonts: Goudy and Garamond

How we used them

Our music minister gave them to those involved (in bundles of 20 or so), and asked them to invite others.

We’ve done “invest and invite” biz cards in the past … and we’re still tweaking the concept/idea. One time we inserted them in our Sunday bulletin and asked for our members to invite others (it was for a sermon series).
Of course, for the musical, I sent the typical news release to our local media, plugged it on your Website and through our weekly email newsletter as well as our new street sign! Whoa. I’m tired. This is a typical approach. Nothing out of the box here.

What are your ideas? Have you used biz cards in the past? Post a comment and let us know!
(Get one too by simply sending me an email with your blog address.)
I asked him for permission to pass on my comments to CCP readers as a case study. Here are my suggested tweaks and observations to him:

Domain name – Great domain name. I really like it. Very catchy. And you’re investing in your own website instead of a free hosted one.

Keep readers coming back — One thing missing is a “feed” or the ability for your readers to get posts by email. Offering site feeds and email updates keep people coming back to your blog. This is probably the biggest suggestion I have …. here’s my related post on feeds.

Search engine optimization – Instead of using “Pastor Jerry’s Blog” for your title … put “In between sermons: thoughts from an Illinois pastor” or something like that. Or use the topics (and keywords) you write about the most. This will help with search engine optimization. For instance, if you plan to blog on “leadership” put “church leadership” somewhere in your blog title. Also, putting your location like your state or city will help with local search engine traffic. Take advantage of that!

Home page link — There is no “home page” link inside the blog (interior pages) except at the end of each post. Make your graphical header itself a link to the home page.

Are you tracking stats? — If not, get a free account with Google Analytics and start tracking your blog visitors.

Overall look — The blog looks very clean. Great use of Slide.com in your posts. It’s also a unique looking blog in my opinion. Looks like you all have customized a template to “make it your own.”

Book recommendations — Get an Amazon Associates affiliate account and begin offering “recommended reading” to your church and web readers. Here’s a good example of how you could do that …

Podcasting — Since you already have a blog, how about posting a link to your sermons each week through your blog and enabling doing a podcast? Here’s my tutorial on it, called Sermon Podcasting Made Easy.

Final thoughts — Overall, you’ve got a good-looking blog and it seems like from the post dates that you blog frequently. With a few tweaks, I think you could increase your readership …. and thus, expand your “reach.”

P.S. – my whole Blogging 101 for Pastors series is located here. It’s loaded with more tips to help you.

Want your own free evaluation? Send me an email with your blog address. All I ask in return is a link to Church Communications Pro in your blog sidebar, or a simple “thank you CCP” post with a link here.

Our initial idea was to send out a direct mail postcard, targeting single adults in a 3-mile radius around our church.

[We are located next to a major mall in OKC, and have a lot of apartment complexes around us. From demographic research, we know there are many young professionals living in them who we think would enjoy the music and message of "Day Three."]

Through the postcard, we wanted them to take a first step — logging onto a specially-themed Web site, where we would try to lower the barriers for them taking the next step — attending a Day Three Tuesday night service.

Another objective was to introduce them, through the postcard, to a “face,” a person — our singles minister, who wrote a short letter on the back inviting them to the Tuesday services. We personalized it even more with a signature and offered his email address and phone number.

Here’s the promotional tools we used:

Direct mail postcard [front, back] — sent to this about 4,800 people in this area.

Web site — since our hosting service gives us unlimited domain management, this cost less than $10. I bought the domain name, uploaded a folder for it, and pointed the domain to it. I also planted tracking code in the site too using Google’s Analytics.

Word of mouth — our singles minister asked our members to invite others.

Things I wish we had done differently:

Got the direct-mail postcard out faster — seems like in ministry we’re always on a tight deadline

Offered something for free — I’ve talked about this before [in 1, 2, 3, 4 posts]

Sent a coordinated email to all our singles asking them to invite others — Word of mouth spreads easier if it’s … easy as pushing the “forward” button on an email

It takes work and good planning to do something like this

Ingredients I used for this:

Watercooler photo — from IStockPhoto

BargainPrinting — for the postcards; one of the best online printers I’ve found

PreSort First Class — OKC direct mail company

Google Maps — they beat MapQuest every day!

Google Analytics — site tracking

Weigh in on this … give me some constructive critiques … comment on this post or send me an email.
